Can Tho Travel Guide

Meta description: Explore Can Tho — the Mekong Delta capital with Cai Rang floating market, canal boat tours, and the most complete delta experience. Complete guide 2025.

Why Visit Can Tho

Can Tho is the Mekong Delta's largest city and its most practical base — a riverside metropolis of 1.2 million that combines proper hotel infrastructure with immediate access to the delta's most atmospheric experiences. The Cai Rang Floating Market, 6 km from the city center, is the largest wholesale floating market in the Mekong region; the Phong Dien Market is more intimate; the canal network radiating from the city center connects to villages of coconut palm, rice, and fruit orchards.

Can Tho functions as both a destination and a transit hub for the delta — within a two-hour drive of Sa Dec (flower town), Vinh Long (bird sanctuary), and the Cambodian border crossing at Ha Tien. As a base for 2–3 nights of delta exploration, it has no equal.

Quick Facts

  • Location: Can Tho City, central Mekong Delta, 169 km from Ho Chi Minh City
  • Best time to visit: December to April (dry season)
  • Recommended stay: 2–3 nights
  • Daily budget: Budget $25–45 | Mid-range $55–100 | Luxury $120+

Top Things to Do

1. Cai Rang Floating Market

The wholesale floating market 6 km from Can Tho by boat — the most visited attraction in the Mekong Delta. Boats loaded with wholesale vegetables, fruit, and consumer goods cluster from predawn until around 9am. Traders display their wares on bamboo poles attached to the bow. Smaller boats circulate selling breakfast noodles and coffee to other vendors. Duration: 2–3 hours. Tip: Depart at 5:30am from Ninh Kieu Pier; the market peaks 6–8am.

2. Phong Dien Floating Market

The smaller, more authentic retail market 20 km south of Can Tho — vendors sell directly to local shoppers rather than wholesale, creating a more intimate atmosphere with more interaction. Best combined with Cai Rang in the same early morning. Duration: 1.5 hours.

3. Canal Sampan Tour (Binh Thuy)

A half-day sampan tour through the canal network southwest of Can Tho visits traditional rice-paper workshops, coconut-candy factories, and orchid gardens in Binh Thuy district. Duration: 3–4 hours. Tip: Arrange through your hotel or Ninh Kieu Pier operators; 200,000–300,000 VND/boat.

4. Binh Thuy Ancient House

A 19th-century merchant house in the French-Vietnamese style, preserved in Binh Thuy district with original furniture, photographs, and a garden of rare tropical plants. Made internationally famous as the setting of the 1992 film adaptation of The Lover. Duration: 45 minutes.

5. Ninh Kieu Riverside Promenade

Can Tho's waterfront promenade comes alive from 5pm — street food vendors, boat departures, and evening river views. The Can Tho Bridge lit at night, reflected in the Hau River, is a classic delta image. Duration: 1–2 hours.

6. Cai Khe Market

The largest wet market in Can Tho city — an early morning spectacle of fresh produce, live fish, and the full breadth of delta food culture. Duration: 1 hour (before 8am).

7. Tra Noc Industrial Zone Craft Village

The puffed-rice workshops and coconut-candy production facilities in the Tra Noc area produce traditional foods using methods unchanged for decades. Short informal tours available. Duration: 1–2 hours.

Local Food

Banh Hoi Chao Long: Thin woven rice noodles served with pork offal soup — a Can Tho breakfast specialty eaten at dawn markets.

Bun Mam: A pungent, fermented fish soup with a variety of pork, shrimp, and vegetables — the delta's most distinctive (and polarizing) dish. Rich, complex, and deeply flavorful.

Banh Cong (Fried Mung Bean Cake): Crispy fried cakes filled with mung bean paste and shrimp — sold at street stalls throughout Can Tho for 10,000 VND each.

Fresh Tropical Fruit: Can Tho's fruit market sells longan, mangosteen, star apple, and rambutan from nearby orchards at prices unavailable in the cities.
