Hai Phong Travel Guide
Meta description: Discover Hai Phong — Vietnam's third-largest city with French colonial architecture, Do Son beach, Cat Ba Island access, and outstanding seafood. Guide 2025.
Why Visit Hai Phong
Hai Phong is Vietnam's third-largest city and its main northern port — a working city of 2 million people that serves as the maritime gateway to Hanoi and the industrial heartland. It receives far fewer international visitors than Hanoi despite its own compelling offer: well-preserved French colonial architecture downtown, a lively street food scene, Cat Ba Island and Ha Long Bay access from its port, and Do Son beach 22 km south.

Hai Phong functions primarily as a transit point for Ha Long Bay cruises and Cat Ba trips but rewards a half-day or overnight stay in its own right — the Opera House, Tam Bac Lake, and the Hang Kenh Communal House are all within walking distance, and the city's seafood culture (reflecting its maritime economy) is outstanding.

Haiphong, one of Vietnam major port cities
Top Things to Do
1. Hai Phong Opera House
A 1912 French opera house in the city center — smaller but architecturally equivalent to Hanoi's. The surrounding colonial-era streets of Dien Bien Phu and Tran Hung Dao are the best-preserved French quarter in northern Vietnam outside Hanoi. Duration: 30 minutes exterior; occasional performance evenings.
2. Do Son Beach
A peninsula beach 22 km south of the city — rocky headlands, pine-backed beaches, and a casino resort. Not Vietnam's most spectacular beach but a pleasant day trip from the city. Duration: Half day.
3. Hang Kenh Communal House
One of the finest examples of traditional Vietnamese communal architecture in the north — an 18th-century dinh with an ornate wooden interior and elaborate carvings. Less known than Hanoi equivalents. Duration: 45 minutes.
4. Cat Ba Island Day Trip or Overnight
Hai Phong is the main departure point for Cat Ba Island — ferries run from Ben Binh pier (45 minutes to Cat Ba town). Most travelers use Hai Phong as the transit point for Cat Ba rather than staying in the city itself. Tip: Overnight ferries also connect Hai Phong to Cat Ba for budget travelers.
5. Tam Bac Lake and Flower Market
A central urban lake surrounded by colonial-era villas and a flower market that operates nightly. The most atmospheric area of the city for an evening walk.
Local Food
Banh My Hai Phong: The local version of banh mi uses a distinct bread — crustier and more elongated than Saigon versions, stuffed with pork floss and pickled vegetables.

The striking Haiphong Cathedral in the city center
Bun Cua (Crab Noodle Soup): A Hai Phong specialty — thin rice noodles in a crab-and-tomato broth, topped with fried tofu and crab claws.
Mi Xao Hai San (Seafood Fried Noodles): Egg noodles stir-fried with the port city's abundant fresh seafood.
Best Time to Visit
October–April: Dry season; cooler temperatures suitable for city walking.
Where to Stay
Avic Hotel Haiphong and Mango Hotel offer mid-range accommodation from $50–90/night. Budget guesthouses near Ben Binh pier from $15–25/night.
How to Get There

Bustling street life in northern Vietnam
From Hanoi: Express bus 2 hours (70,000 VND) from Luong Yen terminal; train 2.5 hours from Hanoi station.
By boat from Cat Ba: 45 minutes by fast ferry.
Final Thoughts
Hai Phong is a functional transit city with genuine character — the French colonial center and the seafood culture are worth exploring between connections to Cat Ba and Ha Long Bay.
