Ly Son Volcanic Island Travel Guide

Meta description: Discover Ly Son Island — Vietnam's Galapagos with volcanic craters, garlic fields, ancient Cham temples, and pristine coral reefs off Quang Ngai. Guide 2025.

Why Visit Ly Son

Ly Son Island, 25 km off the coast of Quang Ngai Province, is a volcanic archipelago formed by the same activity that shaped much of central Vietnam's coastline. Two main islands — Ly Son (the larger) and An Binh (accessible by boat) — offer a combination of geological drama (volcanic craters, black lava coastlines, basalt sea caves), agricultural character (garlic and onion fields covering the crater slopes), and undersea riches (coral gardens with high biodiversity surrounding both islands).

Known as Vietnam's Galapagos for its combination of unusual ecology and isolation, Ly Son receives a fraction of the visitors of Phu Quoc or Nha Trang and rewards travelers who make the journey with a destination that feels both distinctive and unhurried.

Top Things to Do

1. Gieng Tien (Fairy Well) Crater

A volcanic crater on the island's northern tip filled with a turquoise saltwater pool — the seawater filters through volcanic rock to fill the crater. Accessible via a short hike through garlic fields. Duration: 1.5 hours.

2. Thoi Loi Volcano Summit

The highest point on the island (170m) — a volcanic cone with a crater lake and views across both islands and the mainland coast. The walk through garlic and onion terraces on the crater slopes is the most distinctive landscape on the island. Duration: 2 hours.

3. Snorkeling and Diving (An Binh Island)

The coral gardens surrounding An Binh (Small Island, 10 minutes by boat) have been protected from fishing since 2015 and show signs of significant recovery — table corals, brain corals, and abundant reef fish in clear water. Duration: Half day.

4. Hang Cau Cave (Sea Cave)

A basalt sea cave on the island's northwestern coast, accessible by boat at low tide — the cave walls are black volcanic rock, the water inside is crystalline, and the roof opens to a shaft of sky. Duration: 1 hour by boat.

5. Linh Chieu Temple (Cham Heritage)

An ancient Cham temple in the island's center, dedicated to the whale-worship tradition that the fishing communities of Ly Son maintain alongside Cham religious practices. Duration: 30 minutes.

6. Garlic and Onion Farms

Ly Son produces Vietnam's most prized garlic — a small, intensely aromatic variety grown on volcanic soil with minimal water. The terraced garlic plots covering the crater and inland slopes are visually distinctive and most active February–April. Duration: Wander at will.

Local Food

Ty Bich Garlic: Ly Son's famous two-bulb garlic — aromatic, slightly spicy, with a depth of flavor impossible to replicate elsewhere. Available packaged at the port market.

Ca Ngu (Tuna): The offshore waters supply large yellow-fin tuna; grilled tuna and tuna hotpot are the island's principal protein.

Goi Ca Ngu (Tuna Salad): Cubed raw tuna with herbs, ginger, and sesame — a light, fresh preparation served at beachside restaurants.

Best Time to Visit

April–August: Calm seas suitable for boats and snorkeling. Garlic harvest in April–May.

September–March: Rough seas and wind can interrupt fast-boat schedules.

Where to Stay

Basic guesthouses on the island from $20–40/night. Ly Son Pearl Island Hotel is the best mid-range option. The island's accommodation is limited — book ahead during April–May.

How to Get There

From Quang Ngai City: Sa Ky Port 25 km from the city (taxi 150,000 VND). Vinashin fast boat: 1.5 hours (200,000 VND). Boats run 2–3 times daily.

Final Thoughts

Ly Son is Vietnam's most unusual island — the combination of volcanic landscape, garlic agriculture, and coral reef creates a destination with no parallel. Visit April–May for the garlic harvest and optimal sea conditions.
