Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Hanoi to Ha Long Bay
Your cruise operator picks you up from your Hanoi hotel around 8:00 AM for the 3-3.5 hour drive to the bay, with a rest stop en route. Board your junk boat by lunchtime and set sail as you enjoy a welcome drink and a briefing on the two-day route. The afternoon is spent cruising between limestone karsts, with a stop to kayak into a hidden lagoon or explore Sung Sot Cave, one of the bay's largest and most dramatic caverns. As the sun sets, most boats anchor in a quiet cove - this is when the bay empties of day-trip boats and the water turns still. Dinner is a multi-course seafood meal served on deck or in the dining room, often followed by squid fishing off the side of the boat for those who want to stay up.
Day 2: Morning on the Water, Return to Hanoi
An optional sunrise tai chi session on the top deck starts the day around 6:30 AM, followed by breakfast as the boat cruises further into the bay or toward Bai Tu Long for a quieter final stretch. A second activity - often a visit to a floating fishing village or a second cave - fills the late morning before brunch is served as the boat turns back toward the pier. You'll disembark by early afternoon and arrive back in Hanoi by around 5:00 PM.

Why This Tour
Photos of Ha Long Bay never quite capture the scale — thousands of limestone islands rising straight out of the water in every direction, for as far as you can see. Spending a night on board rather than a day-trip cruise is what makes the difference: watching the light change over the karsts at sunset and again at sunrise from the same spot is an entirely different experience than passing through at midday.
Good to Know
How do I choose between the many cruise operators offering this route?
Cabin quality, boat age, and itinerary details vary significantly between operators at similar price points, so reading recent reviews matters more than the marketing photos. Mid-range and above operators generally offer more reliable comfort and service than the cheapest options.
Is the bay ever closed to boats, and does weather affect the trip?
Yes — cruises can be suspended during storms or very poor visibility, most commonly during the rainier months (roughly May to October) or occasional winter fog (December to February). Reputable operators reschedule or refund if conditions force a cancellation, so it's worth confirming their policy when booking.
