6:30 AM - Departure
Early pickup from Da Nang or Hoi An for the roughly 2-2.5 hour scenic drive over Hai Van Pass (or a shorter inland route) to Hue.
9:00 AM - Imperial Citadel
Explore the walled palace complex modeled on Beijing's Forbidden City, including the Ngo Mon Gate, the Thai Hoa Palace throne room, and the ruins of the Forbidden Purple City where only the emperor and his household were once allowed.
10:30 AM - Thien Mu Pagoda
Visit Hue's most iconic pagoda, its seven-story tower overlooking the Perfume River, and see the car in which Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc famously drove to his 1963 self-immolation protest.
11:15 AM - Perfume River Boat Ride
Board a traditional dragon boat for a short, relaxing cruise along the river connecting the pagoda to the tomb sites.
12:00 PM - Royal Cuisine Lunch
Sit down to a multi-course meal in the refined style once served to the imperial court, featuring small, elaborately presented dishes.
1:30 PM - Royal Tomb Visit
Explore the Tomb of Minh Mang or Tu Duc (depending on the operator), where landscaped gardens, lakes, and pavilions reflect each emperor's personal taste far more than the more austere Citadel.

Why This Tour
Huế was the seat of Vietnam's last royal dynasty, and it still carries that weight — moated citadel walls, elaborate royal tombs, and a slower, more formal atmosphere than the trading-port energy of Hội An just over the mountains. The drive alone, over the Hải Vân Pass, is one of the most scenic coastal roads in the country, making the journey as memorable as the destination.
Good to Know
Is one day enough to see Huế properly, or should I stay overnight?
A day trip covers the essential highlights — the Citadel and one or two royal tombs — comfortably, but Huế rewards a longer stay if you're genuinely interested in Nguyễn dynasty history, since the full tomb complex and surrounding countryside offer more than a single day allows.
Is the drive over Hải Vân Pass safe, and is it worth doing by road versus flying?
The pass is a well-maintained, if winding, mountain road, and reputable tour operators drive it routinely without incident. Doing it by road rather than flying is very much the point — the coastal views along the way are part of what makes this trip worthwhile, not just a means to an end.
